Some children can be quite rigid in their thinking about their talents and abilities. A tendency to expect excellence leads to avoidance and giving up easily. Carol Dweck, PhD, describes two mindsets, a fixed and a growth mindset. Growth mindset is thinking that our talents and abilities can grow and fixed mindset is thinking that our talents and abilities are predetermined and don’t change. Research shows us that people with growth mindsets are more likely to achieve their full potential than people with fixed mindsets who tend to plateau and underachieve. This lesson introduces the concept of growth and fixed mindsets and helps children to see how they can shift their thinking.
