Meet & Greet: SP: 4. Formal & Informal Greetings with My Body - Story

Children learn to greet others in formal and informal ways using their bodies.  Casual greetings include hugs, high fives, waving, and fist pumps. Formal greetings include an optional hand shake.  Girls and boys learn the difference between formal and informal greetings and when to use them.  They learn that they shouldn’t hug unfamiliar adults. Girls learn that they don’t usually need to shake an adult’s hand, but it is good for them to practice in case an adult wants to shake their hand.  It is also good practice for when they are older and shaking hands is more appropriate. Boys learn how to shake hands and when it is appropriate to do so.
