This story aims to teach children that fear is a normal emotion and it’s not wrong to feel afraid.  Fear is useful as is can send us a message that we’re not safe.  On the other hand, fear does sometimes stop us from having fun or trying new things. By facing their fears, they gain mastery and confidence.  Children that continue to avoid situations due to fear, miss out on opportunities to master their fear and develop confidence in themselves.  Children should check with a trusted adult if something is safe.  If the adult reassures them that it is safe, they can be encouraged to face their fear and attempt it rather than avoiding.  Children also learn ways of staying calm when faced with a situation that is scary.
